A young mom like you is carrying at least two things: the struggle of understanding how to care for a baby in the best way possible and the additional burden of figuring out your identity. These thoughts combine and make your anxiety level go higher than you can imagine. The anxiety is very common, but it is strange to see no one talks about it.

Why Young Moms Feel It More

Sleep loss and worry are very common among new parents. But for young parents, especially moms, it adds excess pressure of financial stability, fewer peers going through similar situation and an added pressure of demonstrating readiness to people. In fact, no one is ever ready for the things to come. These factors can make you stressful and make the situation feel bigger than it actually is.

Signs It’s More Than Normal Worry

It is normal to be a bit anxious. Let me share a few feelings that everyone of us shared during these times. We all have racing thoughts of worry even when everything is fine. If you feel constant irritability or on edge feeling, you are not alone. Avoiding errands and people because everything feels too much is also a mutual feeling at this point.

We all get anxious and lose our appetite, sleep, and ability to care for ourselves. These feelings must not be thought as a personal failure. It needs to be taken as a normal response of body and mind towards a huge life change, which can be easily treated.

What Actually Helps

The key to passing this difficult time is to avoid isolation. Find other young moms like you and connect with them to rapidly shrink anxiety levels. Anxious thoughts keep looping in the head until they aren’t let out.

Reduce or divide your responsibilities. Pick limited number of activities for the day and let remaining activities wait.

Try your best to offload any and everything that you can. It can be an errand, a chore, or a task that you can get help with.

You’re Allowed to Ask for Help

It is best to reach out to friends or anyone who can support you. It can be any friend, partner, doctor, or anyone who can lighten the load. Never consider your situation a weakness, in fact, it is the most demanding job you are doing and a favor to this world. The best way for a young mom is to make through this part of life without losing yourself.
